Philosophy and Theology

For a long time (for hundreds of years) all disciplines were considered a subset of the science of "philosophy" or "Al-Hikma". Naturally, some theological subjects have some kind of kinship with philosophical topics, and accordingly, these two disciplines are considered in relation to each other today, although each has its own requirements and characteristics. At Shahid Beheshti University, the Department of Philosophy and Theology was established in 2010 with three disciplines: Islamic Philosophy, Comparative Theology and Islamic Thoelogy. Among the mentioned fields, the field of comparative theology was defined for the first time in Iran by the professors of this group and was approved by the Ministry of Science, and therefore this group should be considered the founder of this field in the country. According to an upstream management decision taken in the Ministry of Science, the two disciplines of "Islamic philosophy" and "Islamic Theology" were merged, and a single discipline called philosophy and Islamic Theology was created. In 2020, the specialists of the scientific group, based on the experience of ten years of teaching comparative theology reviewed seriously the courses and topics of this field and approved them. Planning for the quantitative expansion of disciplines in both master's and doctoral levels is one of the group's current top priorities.
